Missoni: Knitwear as an Art Form
GUAM, May 31, 1997 (Updated Feb 4, 2009) / FW/ — Missoni was founded in Gallarate, Varese, Italy in 1953 by Ottavio Missoni and his wife Rosita nee Jelmeni. They produced their first collection for the Risnascente Store in 1954 and it was in 1958 when the first Missoni label was introduced.
 The Missonis in 2003 Inspired by nature, art and architecture, Ottavio and Rosita, who always worked in tandem, changed the identity of knitwear forvever with their aesthetics and technical innovation. The zigzags and stripes, wave designs and flame effect, which have become standards today, were groundbreaking designs when Missoni introduced them. Over 50 years old (almost 60 actually), Missoni remains a family business. Though both Ottavio and Rosita Missoni are still very active, their three children now run the fashion house.
