DALLAS, Mar 21, 2009 / FW/ — Way back in 1962, the groundbreaking book ‘Silent Spring’ by Rachel Carson launched the environmental movement. And though the book mostly discussed the ill effects of the use of DDT, laundry detergents was also identified as a water pollutant.

Forty-seven years had passed since then. DDT use was banned in 1972 and the formula for laundry detergents had been improved so that it will be environmentally friendly. Purex® Natural Elements™ laundry detergent is the first major laundry detergent recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency’s “Design for the Environment” program along with new Purex Natural Elements Fabric Softener.

Launching its second annual educational campaign to make going green easier and more fun than ever, Purex has teamed up with Academy Award-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden in spreading the word that consumers can visit PurexSavesGreen.com to design their own eco-friendly tote bags with original, environmentally-friendly slogans for a chance to win a smart® for two vehicle and other great prizes.

They will also be able to bid on tote bags designed by such celebrities as Martha Stewart, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Tamara Tunie, Ed Begley, Jr., Paul Shaffer, Tom Bergeron and Marcia herself.
