broadway_south_africaNEW YORK, Nov 21, 2009 / FW/ — Malan Breton began dancing at age 7, but left ballet to pursue a career in fashion design. An artist at heart, in his mind and in his soul, chairing the Broadway in South Africa holiday party is like returning to his roots.

A cooperative non-profit venture, Broadway in South Africa provides artists a stage to affect change in the world through art and learn from the potential of bridging two different cultures artistically.

Founded in 2004 by a group of Northwestern University students, BSA defied all odds and raised funds for a cappella vocal group for a trip to Cape Town, South Africa who gave performances while touring. Their music and their art affected the audience; but they got affected to as the members of the vocal group experienced the culture, interacted with the people and learned the history of the country.

From this positive experience, members of the BSA continued to give performances once a year, and in 2006, an arts workshop for 75 local township children was added. Now graduates, the founding members of the BSA continue their work and last year they started holding the Broadway in South Africa Holiday Party to raise funds for their cause.

For BSA’s second year, New York-based designer Malan Breton has been chosen as chairman of the event. Slated to be held on Monday, December 14, 2009 from 7 – 11 PM at Broadway’s Minskoff Theatre, the Broadway in South Africa Holiday Party will feature performance by cast members from: Wicked, The Lion King, In The Heights, Hair, Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages, among others.

Special guest of the evening is Nikki Blonsky who played Tracy Turnblad in “Hairspray: The Movie”. And to help raised funds, there will be a live auction hosted by Seth Rudetsky.
