DALLAS, May 3, 2008 / FW/ — At the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, the philosophy of the Knitwear Design program is to teach both creative and technical knitwear that makes graduates both fashion and knitwear designers.

Students understand the construction of a garment and have a complete understanding of the equipment as a technician would, with the ability to get as much creativity out of the knitting machines, computer programs and technology as possible.

Manipulating known techniques with an experimental bent, South Korea native Juhee Chung found inspiration in the work of Louis I. Kahn, an architect of contradiction whose concepts, though modern and elegant, are constructed of basic and often crude materials.

Through Kahn’s influence, Chung created a sculptured, geometric silhouette and experimented with different construction techniques for her knitwear. She combined fabrics in different directions to make a single garment; used folding and slide techniques; mixed fully fashion, cut and sew, different gage, slippery and dull yarn and elastic and non-elastic yarn to create her unique construction and texture knit fabrics.
