JAKARTA, Aug 22, 2008 / FW/ — Wednesday, Aug 20th was a historic fashion moment in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital. Opening its first ever fashion week under the title, Festival Mode Indonesia and Jakarta Fashion Week or FMI JFW for short, the Asian city puts its hat in the ring for the title Asian fashion capital, which up to today is still up for grabs.

A part of Southeast Asia, Indonesia is better known for its tourism industry than its fashion. With the launch of Jakarta Fashion Week, the show organizers, the Femina Group wants to change that.

“In many countries, the creative industry, including that of fashion, has proven to be one of the financial movers and shakers for a community. The flexible nature of the industry easily adapts to a variety of market situations, making it a powerful economic stronghold,” commented Mirta Kartohadiprodjo, CEO Femina Group, during the opening ceremonies.

The event which is being held with the support and in collaboration with the Tourism Office of Jakarta hopes to raise the Rp79.08 trillion or 4.74% contribution of the creative industry towards Indonesia’s GDP to a much higher level.

With Indonesia’s biggest names in fashion – Stefanus Hamy, Taruna Kusmayadi, Valentino Napitupulu, Defrico Audy, Chossy Latu, Hengki Kawilarang, Rusli Tjohnardi, Harry Ibrahim, Syahreza Muslim and Jeanny Ang on the list of designers who are unveiling their collections, Jakarta Fashion Week should generate the heat that usually accompanies a fashion week in the city and country it is being held.

With Australian designer Akira Isogawa also in the roster, the eyes of the international press in the Asia-Pacific region should also be following the event.
