DALLAS, Aug 2, 2008 / FW/ — In one month’s time, the iconic tents at Bryant Park will go up once again marking the start of the New York fashion season. Officially called Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the Spring 2009 New York season faces a challenge that it had not faced in its 15-year history – a global credit crunch that even the EU nations using the euro experienced a business and consumer confidence plunge in last month. *

Before the Fall 2008 season begun, FashionWindows asked – ‘Will the Fall 2008 season be an acid test for New York?’ As it turned out, American designers, like the U.S. economy, are very resilient and can ride the ebb and flow of the economic tide.

As Spring 2009 season rolls around, the situation, instead of improving, had worsened. Surprisingly, even with gloomy forecasts, there is buoyancy among the fashion scene. Perhaps because it is an election year, and there will be a definite change in the White House.

Maybe, its because Americans in general and New Yorkers in particular, face a challenge head on with every intention of winning. Better yet, it’s probably because to lose hope is not in their vocabulary.

So, it’s a brave new world out there, new in the sense that there are new challenges to be faced, new obstacles to be passed and most of all, new silhouettes that need to be designed and proposed.
