Balmain Spring 2009
Balmain Spring 2009

PARIS, Sep 30, 2008 / FW / — Balmain under the helm of Christophe Decarnin is finally being re-discovered by the mainstream fashionista. And with his rock & roll inspired Spring 2009 collection, his coolness factor just went up a few notches higher.

With Madonna on the soundtrack, the military-inspired jacket and sandals encrusted with crystals, the thoughts of Michael Jackson’s 1980s hits ‘Thriller’ and ‘We are the World’ comes to mind. Add the torn jeans, and Madonna’s trash glamour, again courtesy of the 1980s with her ‘Who’s That Girl’ movie.

But the fashion statement is not just about military jacket with exaggerated shoulder and stonewashed shredded jeans. The main fare is the dresses.

Again, with the 1980s shoulders very prominent, Decarnin created fully beaded cocktail dresses, or just created graphic shapes with crystals. Using draping and ruching, the fabric was wrapped around the body similar to the way a mummy is wrapped! With crystals of the same color as the fabric on top of the mummy wrap, it actually worked!
