Juanjo Oliva Spring 2009
Juanjo Oliva Spring 2009

MADRID, Sep 25, 2008 / FW/ — Arguably one of the best collections that came out during Madrid Fashion Week, Juanjo Oliva proposed futuristic looks that are plausible, wearable and most of all delectable.

A collection done in white (press notes said that Juanjo Oliva had ‘eliminated all superfluous details, even color’), the proposed pieces used couture techniques prominently seen in the gigantic bows and origami folding as seen in the strapless cocktail dress with a balloon skirt shaped like a Japanese lantern.

Entitled DIX, the collection is a diverse array of prepared-for-dyeing fabrics and textures, linens, silks, cottons and leathers. Concentrating on volume and silhouettes, the choice of white made the complex architecture of the garments shine through.

Born in Madrid in 1971, Juanjo Oliva graduated with a Fashion Design degree at IADE (Madrid) and completing a fashion illustration course at the Parsons School of Design in New York.

He initially worked for the designer Isabel Berz in the early 90s collaborating with her shows at Pasarela Cibeles. He then worked as an illustrator, a fashion designer and a fashion show coordinator for renowned names such as Helena Rohner, Antonio Pernas, Sybilla and Amaya Arzuaga.

Feeling confident enough to strike out on his own, Oliva opened a boutique-workshop on Núñez de Balboa street in Madrid. It is in this space where he still markets his fashion proposals in addition to offering a select clientele the possibility of enjoying a made-to-measure tailoring service.

Juanjo Oliva received the L’Oreal Award for the Best Collection at Pasarela Cibeles Autumn-Winter 2005-2006, the 2005 Marie-Claire International Excellence Award for the Best New Designer, and the «T» for Telva 2006 award for the Best National Designer.
