Lutz Spring 2009
Lutz Spring 2009

PARIS, Sep 30, 2008 / FW/ — With white balloons serving as backdrop, and only 5 weeks for the U.S. presidential election, as an American my first thought was that Lutz would make a political statement. Then, I remembered this is Paris, and Lutz’s statement would be his vision for Spring 2009.

For the past several seasons, Lutz had been moving towards collections that are commercially viable without losing the artistry and alternative nature of his creations. With the current global credit crunch and the U.S. financial woes spreading to this side of the Atlantic, one would have surmised that Lutz would play it safe.

Well, he did not! He stayed true to his signature looks – a little bit edgy, a little bit mainstream, and still alternative. Sending a slate blue jersey mini dress that looked like an oversized t-shirt with its front artfully draped, Lutz chose to put a suit jacket over it, thus giving it an uptown appeal while keeping the downtown look.

Draping and pleating were generously employed to get the desired effect of fluidity on a structured silhouette. A-line skirts sported inverted pleats and so did several sleeveless tops that featured rounded necklines with wide cloth layers.

Standout includes a khaki trench coat with asymmetrical hemline, shawl neckline and sewn-in belt. Though Lutz never touched on futurism or androgyny, a major trend in Paris this season, the joyful optimism that this collection provides is enough for us to be hopeful for next spring.
