DALLAS, Dec 19, 2008 / FW/ — To Star Trek fans, Majel Barrett does not need any introductions. She was Number One (First Officer) of the USS Enterprise in the show’s original pilot. In the original series of ‘Star Trek’, she played the recurring character Nurse Christine Chapel who was hopelessly in love with the emotionless Spock. She played Lwaxana Troi in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’.

Most important of all, she gave voice to the computers in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. And perhaps, her last gift to all Star Trek fans, she provided the voice for the onboard computers in the upcoming movie Star Trek XI, wherein she completed the voiceover work last Dec 4, 2008.

On her work as an actress, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry did not provide any lasting influence on fashion, though the deterministic Lwaxana Troi will always be remembered in popular culture as the woman who always got what she wanted.

But, as herself, the real life Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, wife of ‘Star Trek’ creator Gene Roddenberry, she left behind a pop culture legacy that will stay with us forever. From the first NASA shuttle that was named ‘Enterprise’ because of a lobby by Star Trek fans, to a juror in the in the Whitewater trial, (a scandal during the Clinton Administration) who wore a Star Trek uniform during the trials, and the constant mention of Star Trek and characters from the original series in the hit sitcom ‘The Big Bang Theory’, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry had helped shape the history of sci-fi.

Diagnosed with leukemia six months ago, Majel Barrett-Roddenberry succumbed to the disease on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:27 AM CST with her son Rod by her side, reported the Associated Press.
