LOS ANGELES, Jan 12, 2009 / FW/ — It was a night of pleasant surprises at the 66th Golden Globe with Slumdog Millionaire, Kate Winslet and Mickey Rourke taking the top awards.

Slumdog Millionaire was named Best Picture (Drama), besting The Curios Case of Benjamin Button, Frost / Nixon, The Reader and Revolutionary Road. Mickey Rouke won Best Actor (Drama) for ‘The Wrestler’, stealing the spotlight from his fellow nominees Leonardo DiCaprio (Revolutionary Road), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk) and Brad Pitt (The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button).

But, the big winner last night was Kate Winslet who took home to Golden Globes having been named Best Actress (Drama) for her role in ‘Revolutionary Road’ and Best Supporting Actress for her performance in ‘The Reader.’

Steven Spielberg who was recognized for the Cecil B. DeMille Life Achievement Award encouraged the whole film industry to continue making movies that inspire though we might be in dire economic times and the temptation of making movies just for a mass audience is high.

“We can’t forget we are an audience of individuals,” Spielberg said in his acceptance speech.

In a very touching moment, the whole room gave the late actor Heath Ledger a standing ovation when he posthumously won the Best Supporting Award for his role as The Joker in the “Dark Knight.” The movie’s director Christopher Nolan accepted the award on behalf of Ledger and said, “He will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten.”
