LONDON, Jan 2, 2009 / FW/ — Together with Rod Stewart, Rio Ferdinand, Ricky Gervais, Michael Caine, The Simpsons and UK Gold Medallist Christine Ohuruogu, Mayor of London Boris Johnson welcomed 2009 in high-tech style with bigger than life projections of themselves in the center of London.
Sponsored by LG, and an estimated 180,000 revelers along the River Thames, messages of goodwill from these iconic personalities were beamed onto the Shell building via the world’s tallest video projection. At the stroke of midnight, an incredible sequence of fireworks, centered on the London Eye welcomed 2009.
According to a thousand-year-old Chinese belief, the noise of the fireworks scares away evil spirits and misfortunes, preventing them from coming into the New Year, hence the tradition of lighting fireworks and firecrackers.
As sponsor of London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display and patron of the Prince’s Trust, LG worked closely with the charity to bring international stars such as Rod Stewart, Rio Ferdinand, Ricky Gervais, Michael Caine, The Simpsons and UK Gold Medallist Christine Ohuruogu along to the party.
