Chado Ralph Rucci Fall 2009
Chado Ralph Rucci Fall 2009

NEW YORK, Feb 21, 2009 / FW/ — It was a long awaited finale to New York Mercedes Fashion Week, and oh was the wait worth it! The tent was crowded with people all pleasantly and impatiently waiting for what coveted American couturier Chado Ralph Rucci had up his sleeve.

His eclectic Fall/Winter 2010 Collection showcased many delectable details as well as impeccable tailoring and construction of garments ranging from demure silhouettes to the more modern. He surprised his audience by strategically placing provocative “slashes” on several of his creations as well as intricate lattice work and sheer panels with the most ingenious of patterns and designs.

Rucci also experimented with the structural oversized sleeve that gave some of his looks a more modern and avant-garde edge as seen on his zebra pattern silk velvet jacket and others. One of the runway’s showstoppers was a stunning black braided leather dress coat that could make you weak at the knees and seemed as though Rucci himself painstakingly hand weaved each piece into a menagerie of leather braids and webs. But the star of the show earned a wave of applause, a gorgeously exquisite black feathered cage over a caviar-beaded bodysuit that only Rucci could dream up and breathes life into reality.

This master couturier demonstrated his skill using an array of scrumptious fabrics such as silks, chiffons, wools jerseys, cashmere, velvets, leathers and furs. Many of the softer pieces like dresses and gowns appeared to float and glide down the runway as if they were feather weight on the models. This is due to Rucci’s experimental constant use of silk tulle on most of his garments for the past couple of seasons.

The color palette for this collection remained neutral which varied from clean ivory, smooth vanilla, muted moss greens, soft oyster grey, browns ranging from ash, café, and tobacco. Dominating was basic black and an occasional pop of bright color here and there.

Prints were not abundant but did not lack attention. Sir Rucci demonstrated his knowledge of art, combined with his experience in fashion in four frocks that featured blown up prints of both his own personal paintings and photographs of 7th Century statuary that leaves us guessing what will he come up with next?
