DALLAS, Apr 28, 2009 / FW/ — There is something consoling about plaid. Is it the connotation to comfy flannels or grandpa’s shirts? The memory connections are different for a range of people, but on the whole most would concur that it is a warm print.
The original plaids existed in the Scottish tartans and were worn as early as the days of Julius Caesar. This fabric was so integral to the Scottish identity that English officials prohibited it from being worn after the Scottish Rebellion.
The Monarchy Collection seems to give tribute to this history by pairing it with a cape and militia inspired hats. Lela Rose feminizes this print with sheer fabrics on dresses, while Walter boyfriend-izes it. Nanette Lepore and Diane von Furstenberg soften the plaid with mellow colors, animal print, and feminine detail. DKNY and Phillip Lim combine it with black to create flawless elegance.
