NEW YORK, Apr 14, 2009 / FW/ — While most students submit a thesis as their final project before graduation, student designers get to hold a fashion show.

On April 27, 2009, seniors at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) will send their final projects on the runway and they will also be competing for Best in Show with fashion luminaries Zang Toi, Robert Verdi, Lisa Simlor, and Kate Betts judging the runway designs.

There will be two shows, one at 4:30pm and another at 7:30pm, with a 6:00pm Chocolate Reception in between.

At 6:45 pm there will be an award ceremony honoring the best designers with cash prizes distributed by Cotton Inc. for the best use of cotton in an item of clothing.

Critics will also act as mentors with Nicole Miller, Dennis Basso, Alexander Wang, Rickie Freeman (Teri Jon), Wenlan Chia (Twinkle), Jerry Delova, Deborah Marquit, and Carolina Zapf (Baby CZ) lending their advice to the students.

The promising young designers will compete in one of five categories including sportswear, special occasion, knitwear, intimate apparel, and children’s wear.

The show will also include graduating menswear designers for the first time. These men’s designs will be evaluated by guest judges Tim Hamilton and Italo Zucchelli. Additionally, there will be a selection of accessories provided by FIT students.

This annual event relies greatly on the generosity of many sponsors with Cotton Inc. providing funding through a munificent grant. FIT is also grateful to the following companies who have contributed products and service to this event: Aveda, Pantone, Mostlychocolate.com, Smeraldina, Moonstruck Chocolates, Whole Foods Chelsea and Chocolate Springs.

A professional runway show, prestigious prizes from Cotton Inc., reviews from the press and industry VIP’s add to the excitement and rewards of graduating from this unique college, FIT.
