PARIS, Jul 8, 2009 / FW/ — Entitled Premiers Modèles, French for ‘First Pieces’, Julien Fournié wanted the debut collection for his eponymous label a soft foray into the world of luxury dressing. But, it went beyond that. The 21 looks that he unveiled last Tuesday turned out to be a new vision of haute couture.
Stripping the logos, the bling and the unnecessary garment scaffoldings from the design, Julien focused on the silhouette and the fabric, sometimes creating unusual pairings like the first exit wherein the top was made of latex and the bottom made of silk.
A bold proposal – latex as a luxury fabric; when treated properly, latex is soft to the touch and acts like a second skin. It even breaths. With masterful cutting and tailoring techniques, latex can be whatever you want it to be.
And that set the tone to the collection – the freedom of choice, of shedding the past decade’s view of haute couture where excess in the norm. For Julien, it is back to basics – the cut, the tailoring and the silhouette.
Amidst of it all is the woman, her sensuality has been redefined. Nudity had become modest as translucent fabric cut at the right places shows skin yet covers also. The neckline seems non-existent and it feels that the dress will fall off any moment! That feeling of being exposed, of being vulnerable is the new sensuality.
Vulnerability as the new luxury; the concept is almost sexual in nature with a touch of fetish. Is this the new sexy? Whatever the answer is, Julien Fournié had given us something to think about!
