DALLAS, Jul 25, 2009 / FW/ — Based in Bellingen, Australia, Teresa Cowley began making her handcrafted handbags in November 1999, long before the word eco-chic came into existence.

Even during that time, her design philosophy had been to integrate social and environment awareness through fashion and beauty.

To city folks, that philosophy might sound too idealistic, but if you live in a small town like Bellingen with a population of less than 3,000 set in an area which is a mixture of a valley, plateau and coastal environments, one becomes in tune with nature.

A graduate of East Sydney Technical College with a degree in Fashion Design, Teresa Cowley also completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Marketing. Her travels, which have taken her across Europe and Asia including the backpacker trail of India’s west coast, gave her inspirations for her initial collection.

Striving for excellence in handbag and tote bag functionality, quality and design, Teresa chose to work mainly with fabric while consciously avoiding leather. Gorgeous materials from Paris, Italy and India are combined to create many vintage inspired one-off pieces.
