Maria Barros Spring 2010MADRID, Oct 30, 2009 / — Entitled the Oneguin Collection, Maria Barros narrates the ups and downs of a modern heroine like in a Tchaikovsky opera for her Spring / Summer 2010 collection.

Poetic female lines outline the story of a woman who takes the initiative to open up her soul and not to fear adversity.

The Oneguin Collection by the Galician designer pays tribute to the sophisticated, Baroque, theatrical and passionate world of Eugenio Oneguin’s opera, which combines not only strength and drama but also elegance and life with all its mysteries.

This collection, made entirely out of orange and petrol blue silks, organzas, satins and cotton, dresses a woman who is frivolous and deep, sensitive and brave and, above all, willing to grow over time.

The pleats and volumes that characterise María Barros’ work round off this story of deceitfulness and mystery, of small dark corners where secrets can still be kept.

A native of La Coruna, Maria Barros since childhood has a clear vocation for the artistic and a great passion for design. While still a student at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Madrid studying textile design, Maria Barros also began her working at textile firms such as Cadena and fashion companies such as Modesto Lomba.

In 2000, she decided to move to Milan to complete her studies and it was in this city that she did her thesis under the direction of Franca Sozzani (director of Vogue Italy). The collection shown in her thesis was chosen by Wella Labocos Italy for her first fashion show in the city of Milan.

She reaped her first success at the age of only 21, when she obtained the Moët & Chandon Young Fashion Award in collaboration with the National Chamber of Italian Fashion, held in September 2001 in Milan. This led her to show her collection entitled “From nature to art” at a fashion show presented during Milan Fashion Week and organised by the National Chamber of Italian Fashion.

In the wake of this successful experience, she continued her career with Pupi Solari in Milan, to later join Roberto Cavalli’s creative team in Florence.

After experiencing first hand the workings of diverse fashion houses, she decided to dedicate all her energy and creativity to the creation of her own firm, María Barros, in April of 2003.
