GLASGOW LAUNCHES A GLITTERING START TO CHRISTMAS

Tonight (Thursday 12th November) Glasgow’s style mile will be ‘unwrapped’ for Christmas, heralding the start of the 2009 festivities and making for a truly magical experience.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) has joined forces with the cityÕs major retailers on the style mile and other key partners to ensure that the cityÕs shopping crown shines brighter than ever this festive season through the ÔChristmas Wrapped UpÕ campaign.

Buchanan Galleries, St Enoch Centre, John Lewis, Frasers, Princes Square, Debenhams and Marks & Spencer are working with GCMB, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Glasgow City Council for Christmas 2009.

The ÔChristmas Wrapped Up’ campaign will be officially launched by Councillor Steven Purcell, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, and Chair of the style mile Lesley Ballantyne.

Throughout the festive period a new canopy of lights will illuminate the style mile, a compact and walkable hub of inspirational shopping, atmospheric cafes and fine restaurants in the city centre.

Between now and Christmas, shoppers on the style mile will be treated each Thursday evening to street entertainment, roving comedy theatre, light projections and live music as part of the ÔChristmas Wrapped UpÕ celebrations.

Meanwhile, this evening at 6.00pm, a specially created Light Procession will weave a shimmering ribbon of light through the city centre as stunning costumes studded with lights are brought to life by performers from Coatbridge College. On Argyle Street, shoppers will be transfixed by interactive light displays and large-scale projection.
Then, from 6:45pm at St Vincent Place, Princes Square will begin its annual Christmas reindeer parade with Santa strolling down Buchanan Street.
