MILAN, Jan 17, 2010 / FW/ — Taking inspiration from military uniforms from the past 150 years, Christopher Bailey inadvertently gave his audience a visual history of our civilization, i.e. we are a world at war, and whether we want to accept it or not, it is one thing that is constant since time in memoriam.
That Bailey chose it as a theme is not surprising; Britain has been a military power for a long time. In, fact, there was a time that it had so many colonies, the sun never set on the Union Jack.
In celebrating Burberry Prorsum’s “British-ness”, Christopher Bailey also highlighted why Savile Row tailors are renowned for their precision cuts and tailoring – both officers and enlisted men have to look sharp in their uniforms.
History lessons and not, the Burberry Prorsum Fall 2010 menswear collection is one of the handsomest we have seen. The rigors of the military uniform – from the epaulets to the brass buttons, were tempered with modern styling – ample cut and rounded shoulders.
The focus is on the coat, proposed in varying lengths, double or single collar and lined with shearling for warmth. A first – denim makes an appearance in the Burberry Prorsum catwalk; another sign of Christopher Bailey’s experimentation.
