NEW YORK, Nov 28, 2010 / — And let there be light! Last week, UNICEF Ambassador and celebrity designer Vern Yip, along with Peninsula Hotel GM Robert Rechtermann and President & CEO of U.S. for UNICEF Caryl Stern, helped light the UNICEF Snowflake at a special ceremony in New York City.

The celebration also included performances by Grammy Nominated Pop/R&B Singer Keri Hilson and Broadway Kids Care. Hanging above the intersection of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, the Snowflake is an iconic holiday fixture.

Designed by Ingo Maurer, with 16,000 Baccarat crystals, it serves as a beacon of hope, peace and compassion to the vulnerable children around the world. It hangs as a reminder of the organization’s commitment to reach a day when zero children die from preventable causes.

UNICEF has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization in the world. Working in more than 150 countries, it provides children with health care, clean water, nutrition, education, emergency relief, and more.
