Elle’s Intern Competition Attracts Strong Response

LONDON, Jun 13, 2012/ — ELLE, the world’s biggest fashion title published by Hearst Magazines UK, has received a strong response to its first ever search for the country’s best interns who will be paid to edit the October 2012 issue.

ELLE: Edited by the Interns 2012 is a 360 multi-platform initiative combining print and online to nurture young talent and help the next generation of fashion and media stars to launch their careers in publishing. The competition, which closes on June 18, has already attracted nearly 400 applicants despite only launching a week and a half ago.

The unique and ground-breaking program invites individuals who are 18 years or over, and currently working as an intern, to apply for the 10 editorial roles available at ELLE. And in keeping with ELLE’s policy of paying its interns each winner will be paid a contributor fee. The winning interns will work exclusively on the October issue with the brand’s current interns and will be mentored by the ELLE editorial team.

As part of the program, ELLE is looking for an editor, a fashion photographer, fashion editor, art editor, features editor, news editor (online), beauty editor, hair stylist, make-up artist and celebrity editor to work on the October issue of ELLE (on sale 5 September).

A panel of ELLE editorial experts including Fashion Editor Anne-Marie Curtis, Entertainment Editor Seamus Duff, Beauty Director Emma Strenner and Creative Director Marissa Bourke will join ELLE Editor-in-Chief Lorraine Candy in judging the competition and choosing the 10 winners. Amongst various criteria the judges will take into account individuals who generate the most buzz and excitement for ELLE: Edited by the Interns 2012 via social media channels.

ELLE will provide the winning interns with comprehensive on the job training as well as references to help them succeed in their chosen careers.

ELLE Editor-in-Chief Lorraine Candy, whose career began as an intern on a local newspaper, says: “We want to show support for the invaluable assistance interns provide and ELLE: Edited by the Interns 2012 will discover and nurture new talent whose dreams lie in fashion, beauty and editorial. It is the first competition of its kind in the UK and a once in a lifetime opportunity for any paid intern to contribute to the production of the UK’s number-one fashion and beauty magazine.”

All applicants must be available to work on the ELLE October issue, in production in late June and early July 2012. Entries close on 18 June and the winning paid interns will be announced on 22 August.

ELLE recently made national and international headlines by not only unveiling David Beckham as its first ever solo male cover star, but also in the way it successfully harnessed social media to generate excitement for the July issue before it even hit the newsstands.
