PHILADELPHIA, Sep 27, 2012/ — With “Fractionable” as the theme, Philadelphia-based Moore College announced that its 17th Annual Jumpstart Fashion Show will be hold on October 2 at 6 pm at the College.

Each year, junior and senior fashion design students have to devise, design and showcase a garment based on a theme in one months’ time.

In keeping with the theme of Fractionable, students will create designs based on “The Golden Ratio,” symbolized by the Greek letter “phi.” “This year’s challenge asks students to…. explore the influence of mathematics on design and the fascination that mathematicians, as well as designers, have to keep searching for the ultimate symmetry found in everyday objects,” said Janice Lewis, professor and chair of fashion design.

The students will design their garments based on mathematical proportion – symmetrical and sculptural, with geometric forms and shapes. The fabric used must be plain unbleached muslin and remain that way.

Sophomores will design handbags based on the same concept, to be displayed in the Student Run Gallery later this fall.

“The students were initially scared that the assignment was all about math, but they started studying symmetry and got excited by it,” Lewis said.

This year, the fashion department collaborated with student services and Career Wardrobe a community-based nonprofit organization serving women transitioning into the workforce by providing professional attire. Jumpstart garments will be showcased at a Career Wardrobe fashion show fundraiser October 14 at the Rittenhouse Hotel. Those attending Jumpstart are also being asked to donate new or gently used women’s apparel for Career Wardrobe.

This year’s Jumpstart judges include: Kaytie Johnson, director and chief curator, The Galleries at Moore; Lynn Palewicz, chair of foundation at Moore; Jessica Fischer, manager of Wardrobe Boutique and Rakia Reynolds, owner of Skai Blue Media, a boutique lifestyle PR firm in Philadelphia.
The event is FREE and open to the public.

Selections from Jumpstart will be on view in The Galleries at Moore from October 13, 2012 – January 12, 2013. The exhibition features Jumpstart preparatory sketches, photographs and fashions.
