adidas opening ceremony S14 (1)DALLAS, Mar 17, 2014/ — Taekwondo is a contact sport while baseball is not. Baseball is a team sport while taekwondo is all about the individual. Two very different sports that actually also have very different origins. While taekwondo had Asian roots, baseball was invented and popularized here in America.

Still, no matter how different they are, adidas Original and Opening Ceremony found a middle ground. Taking elements from both and then fusing them together, it resulted into a very unique interpretation of the two sports which surprisingly bears both DNAs of adidas Original and Opening Ceremony.

First, using Taekwondo’s garb as a source of inspiration, the collection easily came up with pieces that highlight the uniform’s use of a quilted belt.

This key detail is seen throughout the collection and in some instances is cleverly used as the shoulder straps on dresses and jumpsuits; and as the waistbands of track shorts and pants for men.

Elsewhere in the range, a signature dot motif, originating from a pattern found on taekwondo socks, is used on everything from lightweight knits, to paneled a-line skirts, to backpacks. Pieces for men—including track jackets and French terry crew neck sweatshirts—are also detailed with custom-designed badges and patches, exclusive to this collection.

The adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony capsule collection inspired by Taekwondo is now in select adidas Originals and Opening Ceremony store locations—as well as on-line.
