m martin S16 (42)For Spring 2016, M. Martin continues to develop its brand of modern femininity with a fresh collection of refined wardrobe staples manufactured in the USA.

Designers Jennifer Noyes and Alex Gilbert propose a take on contemporary tailoring featuring soft, interchangeable separates in sophisticated colors. Each piece offers the day-to-evening ease of loungewear pajama dressing.

A sense of sportswear pervades every garment, reflecting the American sensibility of the brand’s designs. Classical silhouettes like airy t-shirt dresses racer-back and ballet-back shapes and loosely cut tailored separates are meticulously constructed to make for clothes that are accessible but elegant in their simplicity.

Taking stylistic cues from the abstract paintings and ambiguous colors of Mark Rothko and Gerhard Richter, M. Martin translates the subtle power of the artists’ compositions into straightforward but sumptuous pieces. The fluid femininity of artist Ann Rhoney’s photography informs the touches of drapery and pleating in the collection, achieving a look that emphasizes ease alongside chic.

A sophisticated color story of ink, pale graphite, shaded green, and softened white elevates a core urban palette, in pieces inspired by everyday modern work-wear. Accents of bleached lime, toughened blush, sky blue and amber rust invest silhouettes with a sense of confident femininity.

Woven textures and papery finishes bring a sense of depth and patina to summery cottons, linens and silk, adding dimension to color-blocked separates. A basket weave turns a geometric V-neck dress into a spectrum of greys. Different striped patterns are juxtaposed for a sense of dynamism. Familiar silhouettes are refined and reconsidered with flattering drapery and nuanced tailoring, making for a softly architectural feel.

Photographed by Bruno Staub and featuring the urbane beauty of model Anna Cleveland, the season’s look-book aims to capture the sunlit feel of the collection; its clean lines touched by a singularly American rusticity.
