No Sesso made their second appearance at New York Fashion Week with a runway show on September 6, 2019 at Spring Studios in New York City to showcase their Spring/Summer 2020 collection. This collection tells the story of Davis’ and Hayes’ experiences during their “world tour” through cities like Tokyo, Mexico City, New York, Chicago, and their hometown, Los Angeles following their New York Fashion Week debut in February. The “I’d Rather Rescue Myself” collection chronicles their ups and downs, explorations, and discoveries over the past several months since breaking barriers and making history with their last show.

The collection introduces the fictional all-power superhero named Valentina and follows her as she saves the day, travels to the beach, runs her business, goes to parties, and has a day-to-day life that mirrors their own. This season, No Sesso focuses on what it means to be a real life superhero. The collection features relaxed silhouettes that allow freer movement and day to day durability, but continue to showcase signature elements that the brand has become well known for like hand-embroidery and experimental hand dyeing techniques. The collection features vibrant colors on materials like premium American denim, nylon, and silk. The opening look debuts the No Sesso superhero Valentina, adorned across a matching cropped jacket and shorts set. Further key pieces include the intricately embroidered halter dress, the sequined denim cut-out romper, and the rainbow embroidered t-shirt featuring the powerful Valentina. No Sesso continues to develop and produce pieces in Los Angeles with the artisanal approach they have become known for.

Davis and Hayes had the privilege of working with Michael Angelo of Wonderland Beauty Parlour, who not only led his salon team in backstage hair, but also led a group of 5 co-oped, immigrant transgender Latina cosmetologists in a group named Mirror. Angelo’s team, and the Mirror team, partnered with Oribe Hair Care, led under the direction of No Sesso’s long-time collaborator, hair lead, and concept designer Malcolm Robinson. The show looks this season featured hairstyles with vivid and warm colors across various textures and styles for the all-black cast across all gender identities. Additional hats were provided by New Era and additional footwear were provided by adidas for the runway show.

“I’d Rather Rescue Myself” explores the power of self-protection, independence, and freedom, layered with the complicated weight of anyone having to carry the responsibility of protecting themselves in the world.
