NEW YORK, Feb 4, 2008 / FW/ — One of the debutantes at Bryant Park (though my editor told me that this is actually Ruben Singer’s second collection, having seen him off-site last season), this young designer’s angular cuts and whimsical proportions made him an immediate darling of the fashion set on the first day of the New York season.
The first womenswear designer of the day, and preceding heavyweights BCBG Max Azria and Nicole Miller, his collection could have easily lost luster an hour after it was shown. But, it did not. In fact, it stayed in the minds of everyone at the tents who were talking about Rubin Singer’s précised tailoring and confident execution.
In one collection, Singer showed that he can do fluid silhouettes and architectural shapes, even create red carpet worthy gown that are decadent yet serious, i.e., without the fufus. Good example is the black mid-calf black gown in layered tulle. The bodice is tight, shaping the torso of the model, the neckline so low that it reached the waistline. It’s provocative without being overtly sexy.
And there’s the silver corset worn over a white long-sleeved shirt, paired with a loose fitting pair of pants. Another evening item, yet once the silver corset is taken off, it’s good for the office.
A mostly black & white collection, with silver and brown aluminum for colors, this collection is a bold statement by the designer.
