DALLAS, May 2, 2008 / FW/ — An African inspired bracelet made of 18k rose gold and diamonds with a moss green silk cord. It was inspired by a pattern discovered in an African fabric, and the shape of the “O” itself was modeled after the O in the OrphanAid Africa logo.

Created by Greek jewelry designer Ileana Makri in collaboration with OrphanAid Africa and Margherita Missoni, an ardent supporter of the charity since 2005, the limited edition bracelet will be part of the 2008 OrphanAid campaign to raise awareness and funds for African children in need. Ileana Makri, is kicking off the project by creating this African inspired bracelet.

“In creating this bracelet, I wanted to relate it to the children of Africa and the OrphanAid Africa organization in both the purpose as well as the aesthetic,” said Makri.

“I discovered a fabric with a traditional Ghanaian pattern while flipping through an old book on Africa. The muted green chord and circular detailing of the bracelet were derived from this simple print,” continued the Greek designer.

“When designing the specific oval to feature as the focus of the piece, I chose to model it after the “O” in the OrphanAid logo itself. I was moved by the subtle imperfections of the letter that held a quiet but powerful beauty, much like the orphans themselves. My hope is that my design will in turn move others to action in this effort to change the world, one child at a time,” explained Ileana Makri.

Other designers have also pledged their support. The Missoni family, who was part of OrphanAid Africa since 2005, hip-hop producer Damon Dash, his fashion designer wife Rachel Roy and fashion stylist Rachel are currently designing products whose profits will go to OrphanAid Africa.

Each designer will have a limited edition piece that will be available from exclusive retailers for a month, with a less expensive version of the item released on a much broader scale with a larger retailer.

The project will roll out with an exclusive dinner to launch the limited edition Makri piece, which will be sold at Jeffrey’s NY, Colette in Paris, and Corso Como in Milan. YOOX.COM will be the online retailer for both versions.

Model and humanitarian Selita Ebanks has also pledged her support to OrphanAid Africa by modeling the limited edition Ileana Makri bracelet. She is also planning a trip to Ghana to visit the children who have benefited from OrphanAid Africa’s programs.
