PARIS, Jul 25, 2001 (Updated Jan 25, 2009) / FW/ — Antwerp-native Dries Van Noten was born to the world of textiles in 1958 via his family who is in the business. He studied at the Royal Academy of Antwerp (1981) and worked as a freelance designer even while still in school.Four years later (1985) he launched his own label and the next year, he presented in London which gave him a break in the business with orders from Barneys of New York, Whistles of London and Pauw of Amsterdam. In 1988, he received the “Award of the Flemish Community” for his work. During the same year, he opened a new stand alone boutique in Antwerp and started selling his creations in Japan. He debuted in Paris in 1991 for his Men’s Colleciton and in 1993 for his Women’s Collection Dries Van Noten’s designs are characterized by “counterpoints.” Two seemingly opposite elements are merged, making them into one. His works are both simple and sophisticated at the same time. Incorporating classical elements into contemporary designs is one of Dries Van Noten’s trademarks. [MARI DAVIS] |
