DALLAS, Jul 31, 2008 / FW/ — If Paris Hilton started the term celebutante, i.e., short for celebrity / debutante for the uninitiated in entertainment lingo, Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France actually invented a new genre of world leaders – the celebtician, which is as you guess, short for CELEBRITY and POLITICIAN. And guess what, Barack Obama’s rock star status right now makes him another celebtician in the making.

Ironically, the controversial political ad by John McCain entitled Celeb that compared Barack Obama with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears solidified this new genre in politics. O la la!

Barack Obama, whether by accident or by design is becoming a celebtician, something that political pundits and campaign managers on both camps have to think about. The polarity of public opinion about the ‘Celeb’ ad suggests that this more than just politics as usual because fans of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton are also speaking out.

Being politically aware and being a fan of Britney Spears or Paris Hilton are not mutually exclusive. In fact, a person can be both; yet, this is the first time that celebrity status came into the picture and Britney and Paris’ fans take their side not of the candidates! Perhaps, that is something that John McCain’s campaign managers did not take into account.

Whether the ‘Celeb’ ad will be good or bad for John McCain still remains to be seen. Still, you have to give this to the Republicans – they were actually groundbreaking in this political ad by entering the tabloid press arena.

One question though – did Britney Spears and Paris Hilton got paid for this one? Hmm.. better ask their agents.
