PARIS, Feb 10, 2009 / FW/ — Sexuality on the runway is nothing new, but when it is shown as high concept that is also artistic, the salaciousness usually associated with it goes away. Instead, it is replaced by a deeper understanding of human sexuality on a cerebral level and still retains the perception of carnal pleasure derived from it.
Walter van Beirendonck’s shows are not just about clothes. It is also a philosophical treatise using fashion as a platform. And while some of the pieces might be more of a costume than apparel, there are more than enough wearable items in the collection that keep the retail buyers coming.
Good examples in this collection are the tracksuits and aviator suits buried beneath the tubings of fetish avatars. Even the capes and jackets are functional. Yet, amidst these functionalities are some of the most avant-garde designs this season.
